The story of Adam Toth Carter
Introduction
Carter League is an online and offline street basketball movement by Adam Toth (Carter). Originally Carter League was created to show Worldwide streetball culture to Hungarian audiance (online) and have street basketball festivals all around Hungary (offline). 525 CUP was the first streetball festival at Adam's homecourt and then he started to cooperate with other teams and companies to improve their basketball events.
Adam was an active basketball player for 15 years. He was an NCAA scholar athlete at Mansfield University and a member of the Hungarian College Basketball Team at the 2011 World University Games. After sustaining multiple injuries, Adam switched his focus to earning a degree in Basketball Coaching at the Semmelweis University in Budapest. He remains close to the Hungarian Basketball circles. In the last couple of years he traveled all around the USA to learn from different summer leagues and basketball events. At the moment he works as a videographer and court renovator with the Venice Basketball League and the legendary Hoopbus. Most of his creative work can be found on his Instagram page: @carterleague
Culture and Inspiration
The main purpose of the Carter League events (like the 525 CUP) is to present the worldwide streetball culture to the Hungarian audience.
In 2019, Adam traveled throughout California for the first time to see how different communities work together with local artists to refurbish desolated basketball courts. Drawing from this experience, he collaborated with a local graffiti artist in his home town to create a colorful homecourt where the youth can be inspired and energized.
Taking inspiration from the Philippine streetball culture, Adam dedicated the 2020 edition of the 525 CUP streetball festival to Kobe Bryant. The tournament’s logo was changed to gold and purple colors and a dedication ceremony was held where participants listened to Bryant’s Oscar winning production "Dear Basketball". In 2021 the 525 CUP has brought the Space Jam Streetball Experience from New York, DC and LA, to Budapest. In 2022 we celebrated 15 years of the Carter League, so the theme got changed to a classic Toronto Raptors look to celebrate the career of Adam's favorite player - Vince Carter (who wore #15).
As HipHop is a main element of Basketball culture, the 525 CUP participants play under the biggest 90’s HipHop golden era classics but can also hear R'n'B, Funk and new school Trap tracks.
Streetball aftervideos, another cultural element brought to the 525 CUP, highlight the annual festival. Adam took inspiration from the legendary And1 Mixtapes, introducing the viewers to the best highlights, players and music culture. Adam has been editing videos since his high school years and continues to create video contents for different events.
Carter League has partnered with the traveling Hungarian acrobatic basketball group: FaceTeam, to bring freestyle show elements to the 525 CUP since 2010. Adam worked together with FaceTeam at their own events: Soul of the Game and BuDUNKpest.
